Doctor Visit

By Leesa Gabel

I had a cancer doctor visit yesterday. Almost forgot about it in fact. I might forget about the next one too because it won’t be for another six months!!! Why?? Remission, baby!!!! (written with the intent to be heard in a Dick Vitale voice) That’s right readers…..blood counts came back normal — like a blood test from a non-cancer patient normal !!! Time for cartwheels and happy dances everyone!!!!

One Month Later

By Leesa Gabel

OK…one month and three days later is more accurate. WOW! Time passes fast. And not necessarily in a good way. January ended on a high note — two solid weeks of morning exercise and two walking sessions with my two girl friends — life was getting back on track. And then it started going downhill (and fast)….first came the kidney stone on Jan. 30…which finally passed on its own without a trip to the ER on Sunday, Feb. 1. Monday morning came, wasn’t feeling well enough to do my entire workout routine so I skipped and opted for stretching. By the afternoon I had a doctor appointment for the Tuesday afternoon to have a growing lump under my left arm looked at….by the time I got home another lump had formed on my lower abdomen and was about the size of a baseball. This did warrant an ER trip (per my doctor’s orders), but the nurse there said it was just a forming boil, prescribed a warm compress and an antibiotic. Took myself and my simple boil to the doctor….she thought other wise. Long story short — I ended up in the hospital with an antibiotic IV and having surgery to remove the two cysts which turned out to be a MRSA Staph infection. What, huh?!? Something totally new to be at the hospital for — new and very unexpected!! Was sent home Friday and Saturday a home health nurse came to teach Craig how to change my wound dressings. The nurses visited a few times. Healing is actually going very well. Craig is an excellent nurse!! I saw my wounds for the first time today — OMG!!! ICK!! YUCK!!! Craig is definitely a manly-man for not getting grossed out by the site. My love for him is deep!! I also went back to work today — for a couple hours at least. Doctor thought my healing was going exceptionally well, so she released me. WooHoo!!! But, since I’m technically no longer homebound, the visiting nurse shall be visiting us no longer. Bummer!! They were really great women — very nice and they really helped Craig and I feel more comfortable with wound care. Now I just have to remember to take it easy, don’t overdue it and keep my hands clean! I’ve become germ-phobic — which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. All this also means that I won’t be able to do the 5K in the Olathe marathon. Darn!!! Think I’ll set my sights on the KC marathon this fall.

I promise not to let so much time pass between blogs. You have my permission to call me out if I do. :-)
